10 Web Commandments
| 6.23.2005
OK. Once again, this is subjective. I asked two guys I work with, Jason and Randy, to help out with this.
1. It's OK for homepages to scroll 2. Content on lower level pages should not exceed 660 pixels 3. Colors should "do more" than just look pretty 4. All users should find what they're looking for and know where they're at 5. The main purpose of the site should never be compromised by design 6. Everything on the site has a purpose. 7. The user is more important than the site creators. 8. Labels should be words a user understands, not what the client thinks 9. Design follows architecture (not that other way around) 10. A site should not be an org-chart with color

Dispelling 10 Web Myths
| 6.22.2005
So I know this is subjective, but everyone has their favorite top 10 web myths. Here are mine:
1. Using web-safe colors is a requirement 2. Carefully calculate the total k size of your pages for download optimization 3. A slow downloading website is because of the site itself 4. Every site should have Flash and other "media" because it's cool 5. Sites should be designed not to scroll (scrolling is bad) 6. A site should be designed for the lowest common denominator 7. A site should look the same on multiple computers 8. An all-Flash site is a good solution 9. I'm afraid of entering my credit card info into a site 10. Color-coating sections makes navigating easy

Beautiful Site
| 6.17.2005
I see a lot of sites out there. Nothing original...most people see tons of sites daily. However, my profession is creating sites so checking out sites is a huge part of the prep work for my inspiration. You've heard the saying that "nothing is knew, it's just borrowed." That's true to a point. There are some fresh looking and functioning sites out there. You just have to look harder and longer. It's with great pleasure that present one of the nices sites I've seen in a while. Simple, complicated and rich all at the same time. Check out www.ourcommon.com. Special thanks to my friend Kevin Pollock for sending me this link.
