3 Interesting Pieces of News | 4.23.2005

Seems like with the weather getting warmer, news is getting hotter. It's no news flash that the latest and last installment of Star Wars (return of the sith) is in theaters May 19). However, I'm re-energized about the whole thing as a result of our new TV. I recently purchased a Sony HD TV which displays DVD movies like never before. My son is getting into the whole Light Saber thing so I used that as an excuse (as any father would) to pick up Attack Of The Clones on DVD and use that as a primer for May 19 extravaganza. It looks better than the theaters, in my opinion. See you all at the movies.

The second interesting piece of news this week is the merging of Adobe and Macromedia. In this case, I feel like I had a premenision. I was at a meeting the day before discussing a UI wire-frame for a particular project and was brainstorming about how we could "sex-up" the tool palettes along the right hand side of the screen. This discussion quickly digressed into a past law suite that Adobe and Macromedia had regarding the use of tear-off palettes and who had the copyright to them. After much discussion, I stated the obvious..."I think they should merge and become even a big powerhouse." Well 48 hours later it happened. Do you think a bunch of board members were thinking the obvious a couple of months back when the deal probably started to develop?

The 3rd and final piece of news is the shortly to-be-released Tiger OS. I have to admit that it looks pretty sexy as does everything Apple does however, I'm not really taken with many of the main features. It breaks down into a bunch of dashboard widgets (news, stock and weather information, etc.), an updated Safari with RSS feeds, Spotlight, a way to search for information anywhere on both locally and online, a way to have video chat with multiple people, QuickTime 7 and a personal automator (Apple's equivalent to the Microsoft paperclip). I like the idea of RSS feeds but I feel like all the other crap is at the expense of a speedy system. I'll probably get it and upgrade one of my Macs as an controlled experiment.
