RSS Feed Information | 11.28.2004

There are 3 steps in having a successful blog. The first is having something to say to either yourself and/or others. The second is setting up your blog with a design and structure that's compelling and easily integrates with a blog publishing tool such as Blogger which in an easy way to quickly publish your thoughts via a Web interface. The third and most complicated step is setting up an RSS feed. An RSS feed is a way for people to receive notification when a site is updated and to read the content of a site without having to visit it. An RSS file (or feed) is a simple XML file designed to be viewed by an application called a newsreader or news aggregator. This is the step that I'm currently stuck on. For work-related reasons, I've gone out to several other blogs and sites (my thanks to all of them) to find out some more information on RSS feeds. My thinking is that if this helps our development team, I can leverage some of that thinking for my blog....

There are loads of good newsreaders out there, including NetNewsWire for OS X and FeedDemon for Windows. There are also online newsreaders such as Bloglines. This is the step that is still in progress with this blog.

If you are using an online service just copy the target of the link, don't actually visit the link as it'll take you to a page that probably won't make a lot of sense.

RSS stands either for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication depending who you listen to. There are essentially 2 common formats, RSS 1.0 and RSS 2.0. Despite their names, they are actually two different formats rather than different versions of the same format. However most newsreaders understand both formats so it shouldn't matter which one you use. there is also a new type of feed called Atom, however several popular newsreaders don't support this format, so I don't use it on this site.

If you'd like to learn more about RSS feeds have a look at this RSS article at xml.com or check out the book by Ben Hammersley entitled Content Syndication with RSS.

'Tis the Season | 11.27.2004

If you’re like most people, you’re probably starting to think about who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. If you’re like me (I wouldn’t wish that on anyone), you’ll be searching the globe for the most unique gift(s) for that special person on your list. This year I chose to concentrate on confectionaries. In an effort to baseline ourselves, lets get a few things out of the way. If you’re into Dancing Deer Cookies, Hickory Farms gift baskets or Godiva Chocolates, you can stop reading now. Yes. I’ve been called a "Foodie snob" many times but this isn’t about conveniently picking up a “practical” gift while shopping at the mall. This is about finding and giving that one of a kind gift that no one knew existed. This season, I’m highlighting 2 exquisite edible delights.

The first comes to us from Arlington Massachusetts. Her name is Jenna and her cookie company is called Jenna b Cookies. These are not your grandmother’s cookies. These are for hip people on the “in” who either want to “binge” on an extraordinary cookies or want to look like a hero to whoever they give them to for the holiday. Using ingredients like Earl Grey, White Pepper, Lavender and Valrhona Chocolate will set these apart from any other cookie you ever tasted. Martha would be so lucky.

The Chocolates by Choco Choco House are possibly the most style conscious chocolates ever made. Based in Somerville, MA, these chocolatiers are molding and designing their treats in the shapes of famous pocketbooks and shoes. That’s right, you heard me correctly. Want a Prada purse or a hip pair of shoes made out of dark chocolate with crystallized mint and lilac?

Parking Spaces & Crossing Places | 11.05.2004

Ever notice that almost every time you enter a parking garage looking for a space, you always manage to get stuck behind some silly car that’s constantly pumping their brake lights, waiting for and following people to their cars? You would pass but their isn’t enough room. You could beep but then you look like an over aggressive driver. And like me, you would leave but there isn’t enough room for a U-turn. So I was stuck behind this person the other day at the Galleria Mall. Once again, they were pumping their brakes and waiting for someone to emerge so they could follow them to their car. Maybe it’s me, but wouldn’t it be a whole lot quicker if we just all drove and parked in the nearest unoccupied space and got on with our errands?

You’re trying to cross a busy street to get coffee or hit a bank machine. In typical New England style, people would rather hit you then let you safely pass. So you carefully eye the oncoming traffic waiting for the right rhythm and pattern in the sea of cars. Finally, you see a hole and start pacing your steps to be perfectly in sync so the car barely misses sideswiping you. But out of nowhere, the car decides it would be safer screeching to a halt and causing a pile up. I don’t get it. They had no intention of letting you pass but when you discover a work-around, they decide to be the hero and let you cross. I usually step back to the curb and start all over again.
